Summer Pen Pals

What does it mean to be a “pen pal”? Pen pals are two people that write letters to one another and send them in the mail. For this activity you will be paired with someone who has grown up in age by many years. They have a lot of stories to share!

You will receive a “Take and Make Bag” that includes 3 stamps and 3 envelopes. Then, you write your pen pal 3 different letters- it’s nice to include a drawing or artwork if you can! Here’s the link to sign up for the “Take and Make Bag”.

Then you mail your letter to the library, and I’ll get them to your pen pal for you. You can also put your letters in the library book return slot too.

Directions:

  1. Write your first letter and mail it to the library by June 20th, or put it in the book return by June 22.
  2. Write your second letter and mail it to the library by July 18th, or put in the book return by July 20.
  3. Write your third letter and mail it to the library by August 15th, or put it in the book return by August 17th.

Your pen pal is going to read your letter and then write back to you. You will get 3 letters in the mail from the library with your pen pal’s letter inside! 6 letters total for you! You can start looking for your Library \ Pen Pal’s letters to arrive to your mailbox around July 10th, August 7th, and September 4th.

Here’s a list of questions you can choose from to write to your Pen Pal about:

Summer Vacation– What do you like to do in the summer? Do you like to swim, or fish, or bicycle or camp? Do you like it when it’s hot outside? What memories do you have about summer- time? Are you taking any trips this summer?

School – What was school like for you this past year? What do you look forward to for this next year? What subject do you like to study? Do you know what you want to be when you grow up? What memories do you have about school?

Animals – What’s your favorite animal or do you have lots of favorite animals, and why? Do you have a pet? Do you have memories about wild animals, farm animals or pets?

Travel – Have you been on a great adventure? Did you travel somewhere on your adventure? Where did you go? What did you see? Where would you like to travel to someday? What memories do you have about your family?

Family – What is your family like? How many people are in your family? What holidays does your family celebrate? What do you like the most about your family? What memories do you have about your family?

Grandparents – Who are your grandparents? Where do they live? What do your grandparents tell you when you see them? What do they like to do? What memories do you have about your grandparents?

Remember, including art work, drawings or pictures can be a nice touch!
