Library Director Attends National Conference on Community Learning and Substance Use Prevention
McIntosh Memorial Library Director Trina Erickson recently took part in a two-day national conference in Kansas City, Missouri, focused on the critical role libraries can play in supporting community learning and addressing substance use. The event, titled “Libraries Advancing Community Learning,” brought together library professionals from across the country to share innovative strategies and programs aimed at community well-being.
Erickson was selected through an application process to attend the conference, which explored how public libraries can become proactive partners in reducing substance use and supporting recovery initiatives in their communities.
Her attendance aligns with new efforts underway at the McIntosh Memorial Library, which was recently awarded a $25,000 grant from the Vernon County Opioid Prevention and Abatement Steering Committee. The grant is helping to fund the development of a dedicated community resource station inside the library.
“Our goal is to make the library a hub for connection, education, and support,” said Erickson. “By creating a welcoming space with access to local resources, we hope to reduce stigma and provide meaningful help to individuals and families affected by substance use.”
The resource station will feature information on local support services, health and wellness materials, and access to information about community partners.
