The City of Viroqua and McIntosh Memorial Library were awarded a Vibrant Spaces grant to support the creation of the Viroqua Mural Walk. The Vibrant Spaces Grant, an element of the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation’s (WEDC’s) Community Development Investment (CDI) Grant Program, is designed to assist communities in creating vibrant and engaging spaces that make it easier to recruit and retain residents, sustain a robust labor force, and enhance local quality of life. With the help of this grant, new and enhanced public gathering places will foster community connections and provide accessible locations for the programming and amenities local residents desire—with the additional benefit of boosting foot traffic for area businesses.

The Viroqua Mural Walk is a self-guided tour highlighting nine outdoor murals in the City of Viroqua, eight of which are in the historic downtown business district. Each mural will have a sign next to it that contains a QR code, phone number, or website address that participants can use to access a recording by the artist telling their story about the creation of their mural at that specific location.
The Viroqua Mural Walk was an idea created by library staff to serve as a year-round catalyst for economic development in the City of Viroqua. The murals in downtown Viroqua are all within a short walking distance from each other making it easy for residents and guests to walk through the downtown enjoying the murals but also patronizing the local businesses.
